How to look for business in times of crisis

In these difficult times we are going through, the ICCA Iberian Chapter’s Annual Meeting and Assembly (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 7-8 March 2012) aimed to handle with determination the strategy to improve sales in the Meetings Industry. One example of this was the ICCA Data Base Workshop.

The Canary Congress Centre – Alfredo Krauss Auditorium – was the venue where the Spanish and Portuguese members of the Iberian Chapter, which gathers 61 professionals of the ME, met for a couple of days.
ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) has a total number of 933 members all over the world.

The Data Base Workshop allowed the participants to learn how to use the most interesting sales tool ICCA offers to its members: a powerful Association Data Base which contains 10.645 international references, constantly reviewed by highly qualified ICCA staff.

Those attending the Workshop had the opportunity to actively practice the use of the Data Base, thanks to the help of an expert user of such tool, Maria José Alvez, Regional Manager of the Latin American Chapter. Maria José taught them, in Spanish, all about the Data Base, providing very useful and practical exercises.

New Business models

The rest of the educational sessions also had a strong commercial approach.
Linda Pereira, an expert international consultant and Executive Manager of CPL Events, gave an entertaining presentation on new business models, with particular emphasis on the creation of new commercial agreements with the Latin American market.

Ramón Bustillo, an expert in selling techniques of the automotive sector, brought a different and complementary vision of selling strategies, with special emphasis on the introduction of new techniques, based on common sense and personal interaction with clients.

As a traditional component of this kind of events, the hosts of the Iberian Chapter Meeting, (Gran Canary Convention Bureau and Congress Centre) organized an interesting CSR activity coordinated by the Gran Canary Wildlife Recovery Centre. Some turtles, which had been recovered and treated in the Centre, after having suffered the devastating effects of pollution and the irresponsible human action, were returned to the sea, in the beach of Las Canteras, next to the Congress Centre.

During the Iberian Chapter Annual Assembly, which was held as part of the Annual Meeting, the action plan of the new Board of Directors was presented and outlined to the members. An interesting interactive debate took place on the different options for Workshops to be organized in the future. The purpose of the Chapter is to become more and more active in order to address the current difficult circumstances with imagination, new projects and ideas and a lot of creativity.

Apart from the intensive working sessions, the participants had the opportunity to get to know the destination better. For that purpose, they were taken by their hosts to some emblematic places of the Canary Islands, such as the Casa Colón Museum or the historical centre of La Vegueta, were they could enjoy different social activities. The local PCO AirExpress took care of all the details thus everything was perfectly organized. The next Annual Meeting and Assembly will take place in Azores in 2013.
