Catalonia: a multi-destination for congresses and events

The Catalunya Convention Bureau, attached to the Catalan Tourist Board, has launched the “Catalonia Congresses and Events” programme, identifying a network of nine destinations perfectly equipped to host conventions, with first-class, modern facilities, accessible, provided with excellent communications and with vast experience of organising events in this sector.

The nine destinations that initially form part of this network are: Barcelona, Sitges, Castelldefels, Girona, Lloret de Mar, Tarragona, Reus, PortAventura and Lleida. All offer the following: congress palaces enabling meetings to be organised for a minimum of 300 people; large hotel capacity, with 3- to 5-star establishments; a local convention bureau to provide support; and a large range of tourist, landscape and cultural resources enabling organisers to draw up attractive social programmes and activities after the meeting.

These range from sites designed by great geniuses throughout history, including Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, to the contemporary creations of such internationally acclaimed artists as Enric Miralles and Oriol Bohigas. Nor should we forget the country’s museums and other cultural centres devoted to such universal figures as the painters Salvador Dalí and Antoni Tàpies and the cellist Pau Casals, amongst many others.

The Mediterranean, the mild climate, innovative, world-renowned cuisine, vast experience in organising great business, cultural and sports events. All these and other qualities make Catalonia a dependable and attractive destination for organising congresses and events. The good position achieved by such industries as tourism, gastronomy, fashion, medicine, pharma, chemicals, food and drink, sport and biotechnology in the country further strengthens Catalonia’s appeal as a venue for congresses linked to these and other sectors.

For 2013 the CCB has the challenge to implement its own Ambassadors Program with the aim to attract congresses as a culmination of the program “Catalonia Congresses and Events“.
