Several aspects of the congress were extraordinary: it was the first conference with full pictography, featuring images of universal communication; there were 130 oral sessions and more than 800 works were presented in English, French, Basque and Spanish, simultaneous languages at the sessions.
The city was adorned with the colour blue of autism, from the Kursaal to the Bay of La Concha (City Hall, Wind Comb and lighthouse), and engaged in events leading to and during the conference, from the Jazz Festival to the Film Festival, the Symphonic Orchestra of Euskadi, the BCBL (Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language), etc. Yoko Ono, ambassador for Autism Speaks, gave the welcome in a video for attendees.
