Record participation at the 10th Assembly on the Algarve

There was a record attendance when the ICCA Iberian Chapter celebrated its 10th Annual Assembly and Educational Forum and 4th Clients and Suppliers Workshop on the Algarve (Portugal), between 15 and 18 April. In all 85 professionals from the MICE sector in Spain and Portugal took part, not only members of ICCA but also non associates interested in finding out about the advantages of belonging to ICCA and in doing so getting in some networking at the meeting, held at the conference centre of the Hotel Epic Sana in Albufeira.

The programme of the Educational Forum was very varied, including key issues such as making the most of new communications technology and the social networks as they apply to the world of events. Formulas were presented for taking full advantage of the ICCA data base and other technological tools, ahead of the presentation that ICCA will be giving of its Big Data project at the next IMEX fair in Frankfurt. Another of the subjects of debate was the challenge of developing the MICE sector in classic holiday tourism destinations such as the Costa del Sol and the Algarve itself outside their main seasons. The so-called “Neuro events’, aimed at motivating audiences, was the theme of another presentation in which applications of neuro science for getting the public to react and to influence their behaviour were explained.

As has become the tradition at these assemblies, there was a Corporate Social Responsibility activity which involved a painting workshop for delegates and a group of people with social integration problems, who set out to design a bottle label for the Quinta dos Vales winery. At the end of the workshop – logically – there was a tasting of the estate’s wines. It was yet another example of the gastronomic potential of the Algarve that was demonstrated throughout the Assembly by the chef at the Hotel Epic Sana (the official hotel for the gathering and whose excellent service merited the praise of the delegates), and the Moonlight restaurant at the Hotel Salgados Palace, where a dinner was held after visiting its impressive conference centre.

Another great success was the workshop for suppliers to ICCA and organizers of large scale conferences. It involved 10 of the Association’s member companies (convention bureaus, conference centres…) and 10 organizers of leading medical conferences exchanging information with a view to staging future congresses. Finally, it was decided that the next Assembly will be celebrated in Marbella on the Costa del Sol. The outcome of the Assembly on the Algarve was regarded as very positive, for the record number of participants, the interest in the educational sessions, the workshop… and, of course, for the good work of the local organizers and the hospitality shown by the hosts, the Algarve Tourism Board.
